Wildlife and Snake Safety Training in Victoria: Helping Your Team Work Safely Outdoors

Working outdoors brings people into contact with Australian wildlife. Whether your team maintains waterways, manages bushland, works on construction sites or looks after parks and gardens, knowing how to respond to wildlife encounters is an important part of workplace safety.

At Black Snake Productions, we deliver wildlife safety training and snake safety training across Melbourne and regional Victoria, helping people understand the animals they may encounter and make safer decisions at work.

Our sessions combine experienced instruction, practical activities and live animal demonstrations. We help participants build confidence through understanding wildlife behaviour, recognising hazards and practising appropriate responses.

Why workplace wildlife safety training matters

Wildlife encounters can happen during everyday tasks. Moving stored materials, inspecting infrastructure, clearing vegetation and working around water can bring employees close to animals they were not expecting to see.

A startled or uncertain response can make an encounter more difficult. Wildlife awareness training gives staff the opportunity to discuss these situations before they happen.

Our approach brings workplace safety and conservation education together. Understanding why an animal is present, how it behaves and when to give it space helps people protect themselves while treating wildlife responsibly.

Practical snake safety training in Victoria

Snake awareness is particularly relevant for outdoor workers in Melbourne’s outer suburbs, the Yarra Valley, Gippsland and throughout regional Victoria.

Our training draws on Mike Alexander’s more than 24 years of experience handling and teaching with venomous snakes. As a zookeeper, wildlife educator and accredited TAE trainer, Mike brings practical experience to discussions about snake behaviour and workplace encounters.

We tailor discussions to the environment your team works in. A parks crew, environmental consultant and construction team may face different situations, so relevant examples are an important part of the session.

One-hour snake safety talks

Our one-hour snake safety talks provide an accessible introduction for workplaces, schools and community groups.

These presentations introduce snake behaviour, awareness, bite prevention and first aid principles. They give participants an opportunity to ask questions and discuss common concerns about Australian snakes.

Live snakes are presented in secure displays, supported by visual teaching materials. This format suits groups looking for an introductory snake awareness presentation or a shorter session within a broader safety program.

Two-hour snake safety and awareness training

Our two-hour workplace snake safety training allows more time for discussion, demonstrations and practical participation.

The session explores local snakes, their behaviour and the situations in which workers may encounter them. We discuss workplace risk reduction, protective equipment, emergency planning and appropriate responses.

Practical snakebite first aid is a key component, with participants practising pressure immobilisation bandaging using training equipment.

Live venomous snakes are demonstrated within our approved snake enclosure. Observing their movement and behaviour helps connect the classroom discussion with the animals themselves.

Participants also receive resources to support learning after the session, including our training booklet and snake identification and first aid magnets.

Four-hour wildlife safety and awareness training

Our four-hour Wildlife Safety and Awareness course expands the discussion beyond snakes to the broader animal encounters outdoor workers may face.

It provides additional time to explore wildlife behaviour, workplace scenarios and the decisions staff may need to make when an animal is present, injured or creating a hazard.

Selected live wildlife and practical teaching aids help explain animal behaviour and defensive responses. Participants can ask questions about their own work environments and discuss how wildlife awareness fits into everyday tasks.

This longer session is particularly useful for teams regularly working in bushland, waterways, reserves and other wildlife habitat.

Learn from an experienced wildlife education team

Black Snake Productions is a family-run wildlife education business owned by Mike Alexander and Ebony Cody. Since 2006, we have helped audiences learn about Australian wildlife through engaging, practical education.

Our work with native animals informs the way we teach. We encourage questions, explain behaviour clearly and help participants connect what they learn with situations they may encounter.
